WORDS ON FIRE by Jennifer A. Nielsen is possibly one of my favorite historical fiction books! I love the momentum this book has, the creative storyline, and the really engaging characters! It will definitely be read many times over again. The storyline is truly captivating. Audra, a young Lithuanian girl, is constantly on the lookout for danger, she has grown up learning to obey the Russian Cossack soldiers, and she knows to not utter a word of Lithuanian in front of them. The price for that would be deadly. Lithuanian books and anything associated with the Lithuanian culture have been banned. Audra knows that this is not right, but this is her reality. But even though her parents have brought her up teaching her to abide by the Russian rules, she thinks her parents themselves are breaking them. So when the Cossacks come to their home one day, Audra’s parents give her a package and insist that she escape, and deliver it. Audra flees, but in doing so she knows she is risking never seeing her parents again. Her journey takes her into the heart of a rebellion: a network of book smugglers. Will she join them in their efforts? And if she does, will she ever see her parents again? This is a wonderful and unique book that will be loved and treasured.
