ICEBERG by Jennifer A. Nielsen is a beautifully done historical fiction book. I strongly recommend this one! Besides being completely captivating, it is really quite educational! It gives readers a glimpse into life aboard the “Titanic” and the different kinds of people who sailed on her. The storyline itself is already adventurous. Hazel is a young and curious girl who is traveling from England to America aboard the magnificent and ‘unsinkable’ ship “Titanic”. Unfortunately, Hazel isn’t going to America to live the American dream, she’s going to work in a factory so she can send her earnings back to her family in England, in hopes of helping them make ends meet. But Hazel really doesn’t want her place to be in a factory, she wants to be a journalist, and she knows that if she can pump out a good story about the “Titanic’s” maiden voyage, she might be able to make her money from that and pursue her dreams. The best stories are often made up of secrets revealed and so, when Hazel stumbles upon several people keeping secrets, what’s more natural than to find out what those secrets are? Discovering secrets all over the ship is hard, especially when you’re a stowaway. But with the help of new friends, including a porter and a first-class passenger, will Hazel stay out of trouble? Maybe, but likely not. Will curiosity keep her asking questions? Or will her dreams come to a screeching halt? And what happens when the undeniable fate of the “Titanic” becomes clear? Will friends stick together to the end? Or is it every man for himself? With its dynamic conclusion, I believe this book deserves a place beside many other wonderful historical fiction novels.
