Pat of Silver Bush

Pat of Silver Bush by L.M. Montgomery is one of my very favorite L.M. Montgomery books! I would place it up there just below Anne of Green Gables! (My all-time favorite book.) Pat of Silver Bush is a little bit hard to get into at first…mainly due to the Irish maid: Judy Plum. I always find accents, (Especially Irish ones. ) quite hard to read. But after staring at it sitting on my bookshelf for longer than I care to admit, I started pushing through Judy’s accent, and am supremely glad that I did! (It’s easier to read her accent aloud, so you can hear how it should sound.) Patricia Gardiner, or Pat, is a girl whose worst enemy is change. Change brings Pat many sorrows and surprises, including changes in her family, friendships, animals, and beloved Silver Bush itself. But what is unknown to Pat is that change is also her dearest friend. When will Pat realize it? Silver Bush, the best house a girl could hope for, stands at the ready to comfort the over-dramatic, and very loving, one and only Pat of Silver Bush.
My Favorite Character: “Judy Plum! She’s very entertaining, and even though her accent is hard to read, her personality makes it all worth it!”-Millie J.
Parental Guidance: Judy is a wonderful character, but her tales are indeed far-fetched. Lots of references to “witches,” “fairies,” and the occasional “leprechaun” are sprinkled throughout the book. So for the parents who prefer no mention of the mystical sort of tall tales, this book is probably not for you. However, most of the characters, except maybe Pat, understand that Judy’s tales are not true.
