Tumtum and Nutmeg: Adventures Beyond Nutmouse Hall by Emily Bearn, is an extremely good book. It is cozy, comfortable, and just, well, downright sweet!! I love the whimsical adventures, and the idea of mice in clothes! When you open the book, on the first page is a sort of introduction: “Hidden in the broom cupboard of Rose Cottage are two grand gates that lead to the loveliest little house you’ve ever seen. Nutmouse Hall. Shh, don’t tell anyone….No one knows it’s there…not even Arthur and Lucy, who live in Rose Cottage. This is the home of Tumtum and Nutmeg….” Right there a wonderful adventure starts, Tumtum and Nutmeg want to help Arthur and Lucy, who are quite poor. But when you’re a mouse helping has to happen in very small ways, from mending glasses, to darning socks, to cleaning satchels, to leaving little—very little—gifts under pillows. But even though they are small ways of helping, they make a huge difference in the children’s lives. Then Aunt Ivy visits randomly because her home in Scotland is overrun by mice, so you can imagine how unhappy she is when she finds out about Tumtum and Nutmeg. Many unexpected events follow, and Tumtum and Nutmeg are determined to continue their mission of love. This book is wonderful whether read to oneself, read aloud, or as an audiobook.
