The Luminous Life of Lucy Landry

The Luminous Life of Lucy Landry by Anna Rose Johnson, is incredible! I recently read this book for the first time after seeing it listed on Read Aloud Revival, and really enjoyed it!! It has an Anne of Green Gables/A Little Princess feel and the storyline is very original. Selena Lucy Landry is an imaginative girl who is the daughter of a sailor, and her caretaker has just passed away. Lucy is a brave and joyful girl, but when she is sent to live with the Martins (an Anishinaabe family who live in a lighthouse on a tiny island called “Harmony Island”) her bravery is tested. The family is large, and her only comfort is her new brother Forrest, who understands her better than the others. She seems to do everything wrong and can’t help but feel excluded from the other children. (who don’t go entirely out of their way to make her feel welcome.) Oh, and Lucy has another problem: She’s terrified of water (since she lost her father in a shipwreck.) which is quite inconvenient when living in the middle of Lake Superior. Her only comforting fantasy is the hope that she might find the ruby necklace her father spent his life searching for. When a chance comes she takes it, and it lands her in more trouble than she could’ve ever imagined. And when a terrible storm hits the lake, it threatens all she has left, and Lucy must choose between her long-held fear, and the sailor's blood that runs in her veins. This book is truly wonderful, and has a thrilling ending. I hope you enjoy it!!
