The Secrets of the Manor
by Adele Whitby
The Secrets of the Manor series by Adele Whitby, is like candy, it’s the kind of book you don’t usually read, but the kind you pull out on a rainy day when you’re ready for a reading marathon. There are eight books in the series, and they are at a slightly easier reading level. ( Probably good for ages ten and up.) The first book is called: “Beth’s Story, 1914.” As the title suggests the book is set in 1914, on an English countryside estate called: “Chatswood Manor.” The main character is Lady Beth Etheridge, and she is thrilled for her soon coming twelfth birthday, a very special birthday…for it is on the occasion of her birthday that she will receive the “Elizabeth Necklace” one that has been handed down from her great-grandmother Elisabeth. Beth has spent a lot of time imagining what it would be like to own that family heirloom, the necklace is set with beautiful sapphires. As her birthday nears, her cousin Gabrielle Trufant arrives, and with Gabrielle comes a lot of drama. And when something belonging to cousin Gabby goes missing, scandal breaks out inside the manor, and Beth is in danger of losing her lady’s maid, (Whom she has become quite fond of.) will Beth be able to clear Shannon’s name? And will the family drama ruin her birthday? This book was recommended by a dear friend, and I still go back and read it when one of those rainy days rolls around. I Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
My Favorite Character: “Shannon, what’s not to like? She’s very sweet!” —Millie J.
