Anne of Windy Poplars

Anne of Windy Poplars by L. M. Montgomery, is the fourth book in the series, and a unique read. There are lots of quirky characters, Mrs. Gibson, Pauline, Little Elizabeth, Aunt Mouser, Nora, and Kathrine Brooke. All of whom I love! Yet another chapter opens in Anne Shirley’s life and she finds herself boarding with two elderly widows, Aunt Kate and Aunt Chatty, plus the housekeeper and cook: Rebecca Dew. She stays with them for three years, while she serves as principal in the village school. Her temporary address with the widows couldn’t be more romantic: “Windy Poplars, Spook’s Lane, Summerside, Prince Edward Island.” And her bedroom is wonderful. There’s a cat (Dusty Miller) that lives at Windy Poplars, and Rebecca Dew hates him. Other than these fun quirks, there’s also some unpleasant quirks. The Pringles. A family who seem to own Summerside and the school, they hate Anne and they are prejudiced against her. She tries and tries to win them over, but to no avail. Meanwhile she finds a kindred spirit next door; Little Elizabeth, who is sometimes Betty, sometimes Beth, and other times, Eliza. Together she and Anne dream of what tomorrow will bring. And through her letters to Gilbert, Anne dreams of what will happen today. I love this book very much, you might think it slow at first, but give yourself time. Once you get a few chapters in, you won’t be able to pull yourself away.
